ha HA!!! Figured this bitch out. I had a faulty RAM chip, shoulda caught this one a long time ago...
OK, here's my dilemma,
I'm trying to install Jaguar on an original G4/400 AGP 256 RAM/10Gig non-partitioned machine, and i'm having a bunch of problems, namely:
The installer will quit at some point during the installation, (i guess that's the blue screen of death?). On the rare occassion that it does run all the way, when the installer restarts the machine, it will hang on the first screen (grey apple logo with the loading doohickey at the bottom). It basically looks like a VCR that's been paused (you know those horizontal bands that stretch across the screen?) and just does not advance any further.
I have tried the following:
Reformatting hard drive multiple times, including zeroing all data.
Firmware updates (i think the latest one is 4.2.8? I did that one).
Starting with OS 9.1 installed on the same drive, no OS installed, tried using the disk utility that comes with OS X
Installing OS X fresh (allowing the installer to erase the hard drive).
Rebuilding desktop of the OS 9.1, and then running the installer.
I had the most luck after zeroing all data. The installer completed, but i still wound up with the problem that it wouldn't boot. I should also mention that i did not install anytning other than the BASE system software. No BSD subsystem, no printer drivers, no additional applications.
Oh, i also tried using another copy of OS X.2 that came with one of the machines at work (relax, i bought the full version). That never got through the installation process, but at that point i was trying to run the installer with OS 9.04 installed and before the latest firmware update.
So now, i'm having trouble re-installing OS 9.04 (won't start with anything other than extensions off- and i disabled most, and it still won't boot).
If anyone could offer any help at all of things to try, otherwise i'm going to be off to consult with a Mac Genius. Or, does someone want to buy a used G4/400 for cheap?!
