I have too much of my hard drive taken up by "Backups". I need this space back to repartition my parallels VM for XP. How do I get rid of these "Backups" and rid Lion of backing up revisions of my software?

You can disable them if you want, sudo tmutil disablelocal

They are not making revisions of your software, it is used when the TM disk is not available.
