OSX Lion in 32-bit mode faster than 64-bit??????????

Hi,
I just booted my Mac (MB 2008, 4GB RAM) into 32 bit mode (OSX Lion) to use my cisco VPN again. I noticed a (dramatic) speed increase in overall performance (Word starts instantly). Did anybody notice equal effects?
