OSX Maintenance Jobs

Hi I am new to the Mac and I keep hearing things about OSX running maintenance jobs in the middle of the night to optimise the computer. As I always put my Mac to sleep at night I am worried that these things aren't getting done. What sort of maintenance does it do and can I do it during the day instead or do I have to leave my computer on one night a week or something?

You can download a program called Onyx from here. This will let you manually run all the scripts, as well as a few other cool options.
