is there any way to extract those pictures that OSX has in its default screen savers? e.g., the cosmos one...
are they hidden somewhere as files or are they built into the OS?
 
yeah, I don't have a mac with me, but it involves right clicking and
saying 'show contents' and all the individual pictures are in some
folder. SOrry I couldn't be of much help, but that is all i know. ;)

Dead right. The location for the screen saver files is "/System/Library/Screen Savers", then right click on your preferred screen saver and select show package contents, then once the new window opens go in into "Contents/Resources" and you will find all the pics :)
