I have:
iMac Intel 1.6Ghz 10.4 w/ 1 GB of Ram
Sawtooth 10.4 PPC w/ 384MB of Ram
XP PC w/ 128 MB of Ram + CD burner and USB connections
MyBook Firewire 400/USB 2.0 External Hard Drive by Western Digital
I'm planning to install:
OS X on the External Hard Drive. First I would make a HFS+ partition on the external drive using Volume Works that matches the exact size of my iMac intel drive. Then I copy my iMac drive to my external drive using Super Duper. Then just hold down the C key while booting on the iMac intel to boot from the drive. Would that work?
Ubuntu or other linux installation on the External Hard Drive. I think I'll need to make ex3 partition on the external hard drive using Volume Works, then reboot with a Ubuntu LiveCD and tell it to install to the external hard drive partition. Then afterwards when booting the iMac I can do the c-key thing to boot from the ex3 partition on the hard drive. Would that work?
XP on External Hard Drive. I think what I do is format a partition on the external drive as NTFS. Then I put the XP install CD into the iMac intel, reboot, and install XP to the NTFS partition on the external drive. Or would I have to use BartPE? Then when booting the iMac intel I hold down CMD+OPTION+SHIFT+DEL (https://forums.macrumors.com/newreply.php?do=newreply&p=2292040) at startup then somehow the firewire firmware (?) allows Windows to start from the external drive. Alternatively I could boot into OS X then using Disk Utility I could select XP on the External Hard Drive and tell it to boot from there, then reboot into the XP on the external hard drive. Would that work?
If it doesn't I'd have to buy Fusion then take the performance hit while running XP. I'd rather try to run XP off the drive first though.
