osx yosemite to iOS 8 I message

I have a 2014 Mac Book Pro and an iPhone 5 running IOS 8, my son has an iPhone 6. I have my iMessage turned off, but my son has his on.
If he sends me a message and my Mac is turned off it comes to my phone as an SMS message, but if my Mac is turned on my phone dose not receive the message at all.
Have I got the set up wrong.
