I seem to have an inconsistent time with OSXvpn server on my ibook,

sometimes it's flawless, sometimes it just sits there and bounces till it gets tired!

what tiny shred of info or advice you all may be able to offer me?

thanks,
r.

Do you mean that you are running the OS X Server on your iBook? Or are you using Internet Connect on your iBook to connect to an OS X Server?

I've never had any issues with the VPN server in OS X Server. You might check the logs to see what they have to say.

Not sure about the VPN server, but the VPN client on 10.4 sucks the big one. As in, it simply doesn't work  at least with the VPN server I use. 10.3.9 works fine however.

VPN (virtual private network) connectivity, including connecting to Cisco Systems Inc.'s concentrators, is one of the more persistent problem areas. Most VPN clients that worked under previous versions of Mac OS X were incompatible with Tiger 10.4.0. Apple's 10.4.1 update fixed a kernel bug, enabling some VPN client developers to release Tiger-compatible versions.
