when you're updating your software do you have to be connected to the same WIFI as your Itunes account? so basically can you download and install updates on any random WIFI hotspots (starbucks) ?

You can use 3g but its not advised.

What if you lost 3g signal midway and anyone not on an unlimited data plan will see their allowance eaten up.

If you lost signal it would resume download when you got signal back? It certainly isn't "not advised". You can actually start the download and then close settings and do whatever you want, it will let you know when it's ready to go.

Its not advised by me. I certainly would not want to break away from such an important procedure such as firmware updates. I want a clean all in one go install. Not here and there.

Isn't it far more logical that it will download fully and THEN update the phone? (You know, just like Lion does?)

I mean, I don't know how it works, but do you have any proof that Apple decided to go with the ludicrous system of updating the software WHILE it's downloading?

That sounds crazy to me.

Proof !

I simply said I prefer a simple install and do it all in one go !

That IS the way it works. The software update downloads, and THEN goes through the installation process. It's the same process as any other software update except.....YOU DONT LOSE ANY DATA!! WOO-HOO!

I was so excited when my device finished updating and I didn't have to re-sync the whole damn thing :D
