I haven't been around much for the past couple of months, but I've been pretty busy with a couple of projects that I've been working on.
One is an arcade cabinet project, using an Arcade1up Asteroids cabinet. The original Arcade1up unit was very limited; only played four games, used a very old version of MAME, and had a very crappy monitor and controls. I was originally going to use a G5 to power the machine (hence the "sort of off-topic"), but it was much too limited for what I wanted to accomplish, and much too big to fit, so I "settled" for a decased Dell Optiplex 790 upgraded with a second generation i7 processor. I also bought a 5:4 ratio 17" Dell ultrasharp monitor to replace the stock one, which was also decased and installed with a custom cut mount. It didn't originally have a coin door, but I added a working one, as it's required for that real arcade feel
It's pretty much finished; I just need to mount the subwoofer under the cabinet in the riser and it's done. Took me just under two months to complete.
Another is this 1973 TV Ping Pong that needs extensive electronic restoration. Since it's going to be a huge job recapping the monitor (actually, it's a black and white TV converted to a monitor by tapping into the composite sync) and repairing the PCB (lots of circuit tracing and logic probe work), I'm taking an old Radio Shack Pong unit and wiring it up to accept quarters, attaching the pots to the game, and connecting it to a 19" CRT TV, and shoving it into the cabinet. I've converted the Radio Shack unit to use composite sync, and have successfully done some jumper wire tests. Barring any issues, this one won't take more than a couple of hours once I get to it.
What are some of your other projects that you have going on?
