"Other" taking up too much Gb

I often have this issue where OTHER takes up like 5gb on my iphone, I than go delete text message and whatsapp messages that have lots of pictures and videos that I sent to family and it frees it up down to like 1gb, is this normal that OTHER take up all that space just cause I am sending pics and videos in text?

How can I save these texts and not have other take up so much space? is this on every device to be normal?

some people say you can delete it by doing a restore of icloud, I would think that puts all the same stuff back on, others say delete text messages that have these pics and videos in them, what do you think?

Mine usually disappears after a sync.

Additionally, if you have iTunes Match "on" partial song files get downloaded to the device for every song played. Turning iTunes Match "off" for a few minutes then turning it back "on" will clear this "cache".

You can try using something like PhoneClean (http://www.imobie.com/phoneclean/) to free up some space.
