iPhone 7/Plus Otterbox causing problems

my phone works perfect until I put it in the otterbox defender, then it skips letters or won't type at all also I don't receive notifications.
Has anyone else had or heard of this problem ?

It may be flexing the phone or applying pressure to one of the buttons.

I don't think thats the problem, there's plenty of clearance around the buttons . I removed the soft outer cover with no difference. Thank you for your input.
