Otterbox Defender Armband. How do you get the phone in it?

I have the Otterbox Defender case, and I bought the Otterbox Defender Armband

It says that you need the Defender Case to use the armband, but I see no reasonable way to put the iPhone 3GS with the Defender Case on it into the armband. I am stretching that armband so much when I try it that I am afraid I am going to rip it.

What am I missing here? Does anyone have the Defender case/armband combination working well?
