As soon as I re-booted my McPro 8 Core in 10.6.8, my two external drives (Firewire 800 and a USB 3.0, running off a CalDigit PCIE Card) do not mount and more seriously neither does the Built in SuperDrive DVD.

I re-booted from one of the other 3 internals which carries 10.6.7 and all was fine, unfortunately Software Update got to it when another family member was using the Mac and, you guessed it, that too runs 10.6.8 now. Interestingly, the LACie FW 800 drive now mounted although no sign of the WD 2 TB in either USB3 or USB2. System Profile however sees all of these devices on both systems.

I managed to open the DVD drawer by booting up from TechTools e-Drive and re-installed SL 10.6.0 onto the secondary boot volume with the intention of incrementally upgrading as far as 10.6.7,. I got as far as 10.6.1, this causes the dreaded Black Screen and 're-start manually' message, which just loops re-start after restart.

Back to primary drive now having removed the drive that was crashing but no access to DVD. My external LaCie drive went bang months back.

Any ideas?
