To the OP: Context determines the means of communication.
I'd go one step further and say that when we communicate we should also keep in mind what McLuhan said, that is "the medium is the message" because how we want to convey what we want to convey is a fundamental part of the communication process.
Listening to a recording of someone yelling, crying "No" to an accusation of crime during a trial conveys a very different message of the dry transcript of the very same letters that are uttered by the accused:
LAWYER: Did you commit this crime?
ACCUSED: No.

Ah, that does bring back memories: My mother used to cite that exact quote - 'the medium is the message' - to me when I was a teenager at school, when she was studying for a degree in social sciences at night (while holding down a day job, and rearing us - with, it must be said the full and enthusiastic support of my father).
