Sorry for a basic question, but I hope someone can clarify a few things for me about virtual memory.

I have a new Mac Pro with 64GB of RAM and 1TB of disk space (which is practically unused). I'm using it for calculations involving very large matrices in Matlab. What I've noticed is that whenever the amount of virtual memory in Activity Monitor approaches 128GB (twice the amount of physical memory), the system would give an "out of memory" message and pause the Matlab process.

As far as I understand, the only limit on virtual memory should be the amount of free disk space. So why can't the system increase it over 128GB? Is it related somehow to Matlab restrictions (which I could not find yet)?

Thanks
