iPod touch Out of Warranty 4th gen Not charging

Hey,
I plugged in my iPod and it said charging not supported with this accessory.
Then I tried a direct connection to my laptop (MBA) and it is not recognized.
Why is it not charging?

There are two possibilities. Something on the iPod could be broken, or the cable could be damaged. If you have more than one USB/dock cable, have you tried all of them?

If you only have one cable, you could bring both the iPod and the cable in to the Apple store and it should be real quick for them to determine if it's the iPod or the cable.
