Is there anything like this for the PowerBook? I love to work outdoors, but the only way to do it is with an apron over my head and the screen. I'm sure there would be a *huge* market for a notebook screen that would let you work at the beach, in the garden, on a mountain...

If you work outdoors, chances are your laptop screen is difficult, if not impossible, to view in direct sunlight. While there are notebooks that use reflective-screen technology to combat glare, the indoor screen quality can be less than optimal. The NEC Versa E120 DayLite offers a solution: a dual-mode reflective display that works outdoors and allows you to switch to illumination mode when working indoors.

At 3.1 pounds and less than an inch thick, the DayLite is easily transported between the office and the field. Unlike last year's model, which was based on the Transmeta Crusoe processor, the DayLite uses the low-voltage 800-MHz PIII and comes with 256MB of on-board PCI RAM, a 20GB hard drive, and an external USB CD-ROM drive.

Integrated components include three USB ports, a FireWire and an IR port, a 56k modem and Ethernet connections, and a combination card slot that will accept one PC Card and one CompactFlash card.

Driven by an 8MB S3 graphics twister video controller, the DayLite's 10.4-inch XGA display lives up to its name: It's easy to read in both direct lighting and shade without squinting. Indoors, the screen is readable once you flip the illumination switch, but compared with other ultraportable notebooks we've seen, image quality is a bit on the dull side.

With notebook users becoming even more mobile, the indoor/outdoor innovations of the DayLite answers their call.
