Outgoing Mac Mail shows 5 of 5 when I'm only sending 1??

I use a MBA with Yosemite.

I noticed my outgoing mail (without attachments) started going out very slowly. On the lower left of my Mac Mail client where the grey "Outgoing Messages" it shows 5 of 5, when I am only sending 1.

There is nothing more in my outbox folder at the time. What are these "extra" messages and how can I clear them?
