Outgoing mail choking on a bone

I'm experiencing a problem with my mail. Everytime I check my mail either through wi-fi or EDGE I get a message that says " Cannot send Mail. The Connection to the outgoing sever 'smtp.mac.com' failed".
I can however send all new mails. I think it's choking on a couple of old messages I tried resending to myself from a drafts folder. Any ideas on how to clear the pipe?
