i just set up mail on my new iMac and I am getting an error when trying to send mail.

it is trying to send using smtp.mac.com:myname:myname.
i have checked all settings and they are set to smtp.mac.com.
i cannot figure out why it is adding :myname TWICE.

any help is appreciated.

has ANYONE had this very annoying problem?
i am sure there is a simple answer, but it has escaped me.

Check the Server Settings.. it should look like this:

yellow, thanks for the reply.
that is how it looks.
this is driving me crazy.
file>preferences>accounts shows that exact screen (well with my username and password in those specific fields)

when an email is sent it give me the error message with options like edit message, resend later, or choose outgoing server (which shows smtp.mac.com:myname:myname).

how did you do the screen capture? maybe if i posted my account page and the error page, this would make more sense.

I use SnapzPro X for my screen captures. You can use Cmd-Shift-3 (or Cmd-Shift-4),which is built in, but not as nice.

Just try creating a new SMTP server and putting in the requisite info. Or create one without the username and password, and see if it picks it up from your "account" set up.
