I gave my mother an iPad 4 earlier this year, but she recently said she's still using her old iPad 1 to send mail because it takes too long on the new iPad. Now that she's visiting, I just did a side-by-side test connected to the same Wi-Fi and sending the same one-sentence test text, and the iPad 4 repeatedly took close to 10 minutes to send, while the iPad 1 was instantaneous. She's using the Apple mail app linked to her Gmail account. I tried deleting the account and setting it up again, but that made no difference. Any other things I should try?

I'd recommend trying Reset Network Settigs, there might be something funky going on with the network portion of the iPad that is causing the problems. Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
