I’ll start with mine.
I hate Smart TVs with a passion. They’re incredibly frustrating devices. Not only do they have slow, janky, ad ridden software, but I hate that if you have a steaming stick and a soundbar you have to juggle 3 remotes to operate the damn thing.
Here is my concept for a modern dumb tv.
The TV is a panel with no visible features on the front besides the screen, the inputs are on the back in a similar configuration to normal current TVs. The remote only has power, volume, a d-pad, settings button, and back button.
In standard operation the remote can be completely unneeded. It is just for if you need to fiddle with settings or switch inputs. The panel functions as so:
—when a device wakes up, the panel turns on via CEC. It begins to display that device’s content. There is no pop up that shows which input you are on or any similar. Just your content. When that device stops sending a signal, the screen immediately goes black. After 15 seconds, the TV turns off. It shows no visible warning of this, and if the panel is OLED it appears as if the TV just turned off instantaneously. The 15 second delay is in case of momentary interruptions.
—if device A is turned on and displaying and you then turn on device B, it will switch to the input of device B. If you want to return to device A, you can press up/down on the remote’s D-Pad, or you can simply manage the inputs to where only one device is on at a time.
—normally if nothing is detected in an input it will be unselectable, however you can alter this behavior in settings for legacy devices that don’t support CEC.
—
Out of all of this, the thing I find the weirdest is that current TVs usually don’t have a way to turn off in under 10 minutes. My sister has one that won’t auto turn off in under 30. Modern TVs take like <10 seconds to turn on, why are they so fixed on taking forever to auto shut off?
P.S. I am aware this will literally never happen as all TV makers make way more money from their ad infested UIs than the hardware.
