I’ll start with mine.

I hate Smart TVs with a passion. They’re incredibly frustrating devices. Not only do they have slow, janky, ad ridden software, but I hate that if you have a steaming stick and a soundbar you have to juggle 3 remotes to operate the damn thing.

Here is my concept for a modern dumb tv.

The TV is a panel with no visible features on the front besides the screen, the inputs are on the back in a similar configuration to normal current TVs. The remote only has power, volume, a d-pad, settings button, and back button.

In standard operation the remote can be completely unneeded. It is just for if you need to fiddle with settings or switch inputs. The panel functions as so:

—when a device wakes up, the panel turns on via CEC. It begins to display that device’s content. There is no pop up that shows which input you are on or any similar. Just your content. When that device stops sending a signal, the screen immediately goes black. After 15 seconds, the TV turns off. It shows no visible warning of this, and if the panel is OLED it appears as if the TV just turned off instantaneously. The 15 second delay is in case of momentary interruptions.

—if device A is turned on and displaying and you then turn on device B, it will switch to the input of device B. If you want to return to device A, you can press up/down on the remote’s D-Pad, or you can simply manage the inputs to where only one device is on at a time.

—normally if nothing is detected in an input it will be unselectable, however you can alter this behavior in settings for legacy devices that don’t support CEC.

Out of all of this, the thing I find the weirdest is that current TVs usually don’t have a way to turn off in under 10 minutes. My sister has one that won’t auto turn off in under 30. Modern TVs take like <10 seconds to turn on, why are they so fixed on taking forever to auto shut off?

P.S. I am aware this will literally never happen as all TV makers make way more money from their ad infested UIs than the hardware.

I haven't had a TV in decades. A large monitor with an Apple TV and a pair of HomePods is a modern entertainment setup without a privacy-invading user-interface-lagging "Smart TV".

I've been out of the TV purchasing market since 2018. Is the state of the market now such that no 'dumb' TVs are available for sale?

I had to add Amazon Firesticks to both my TVs to get smart capability, and the one I got in 2018 is 4K.

We've been using cable TV since 2004 and only recently ditched the box so I haven't been paying attention.

My LG TV is a few years old, I don't know if ads are a new thing or I just lucked out, but I don't see any ads.

While initially I wasn't a fan of so called "smart tvs) I found my LG to be really useful, since cutting the cord. It can run most of the streaming services that I need/want

The Chromecast TV we got years ago is as close as you can get to dumb anymore. No Apps, can only play stuff through casting or inputs. Our Fire TV (an actual TV, not a stick or box) works how you state. I don't think we have used the remote in months. Just ATV on, and the TV comes on and switches to ATV Input. Turn the ATV off, and both go off. Only issue is sometimes it takes a bit to switch to the ATV Input.

The ATV can work that way, but other devices such as game consoles don’t power down the TV with the device. Also, chrome casts now have UI and a remote so I imagine unfortunately that simplicity is probably gone on new panels.

In general, I hate jank so much. It bothers me more than it should. But your note about it sometimes taking a while to get to the right input is exactly the type of thing I hate about modern TVs. They don’t “just work.”

You must have gotten lucky, as even marketing pictures of new LG TVs have ads on them.

18" fan-less MacBook with the CPU and GPU performance of a standard MBA with ProMotion XDR display.
so something that's great to work with at home without unnecessary clutter.

for portability, there are already many great options, so maybe i'm just weird, as it seems that not even the PC world is that much interested in something like that all too much either, as the only couple of 18"ers i could find were some bulky, noisy and room heating gaming monstrosities

I always found it weird that they stopped making the 17" devices. Not a size for me, but certainly seems like it has a niche. Would be an all time battery champ I'd imagine.

There always this one but it is way to big to fit in a car :(

Plus I would be worried it would break after setting it down and up too many times.
