Outlook (PC) folders did not migrate over to iMac

I just helped somebody migrating from a PC to a brand new iMac with OS X 10.8. (Almost) everything went well - except with the email.

All email accounts that were in Outlook on the PC are now in Mail, but not a single local folder (mailbox) from Outlook came over to the iMac ... and there were at least 50 folders with altogether at least 1000 emails.

Is there a reason why these folders did not migrate? Is there now still a way how to get these folders and emails over to the iMac?
