I am trying to output 5.1 surround sound from my 2015 MacBook Pro to my Samsung TV via HDMI. I have an optical cord going from the TV to the surround sound unit with speakers attached. Both the TV and the surround sound unit is showing stereo sound. With my old Windows machine, I could set the sound to Dolby 5.1 within the OS and everything that gets outputted would be Dolby.
Whenever I go to the Audio Midi Setting the option to select 5.1 surround sound is greyed out. The option is also greyed out on my Samsung TV because there is no 5.1 Dolby coming from the MacBook Pro. Does the MacBook Pro have to communicate and recognize the audio receiving device in order for me to be able to select 5.1 from the Audio Midi Settings? Shouldn’t OS X just output 5.1 regardless of what is connected to it?
