From my 2019 Macbook Pro I was trying to display a HD (1080p) movie downloaded from the TV app on an external projector using VGA connector (USB-C -> VGA), but got an error that this was not possible due to the display not supporting HDCP. It worked fine on a HDMI based projector. So it seems that there are some copy protection measures in place that prevents 1080p video being displayed on VGA.

But I read somewhere that SD content would play fine over VGA, so I tried to download an SD version from the TV app, but it seems that the "lowest quality" I could get was 720p (which I still think is classified as HD).

So the questions are:
  1. Will 720p play over VGA, or will I get the same HDCP issue? I don't have access to the projector now to test this.
  2. Is there a way to download "pure" SD content via TV app on my Macbook?
With regards to the second question, I tried the following settings in the TV app under "Preferences - Playback":
  • Download quality: Up to SD
  • Unchecked "Download HDR when available"

But I still got 720p when downloading movie with these settings.
