I have a non jailbroken iPhone. I have been using it regularly for about 3 months. Syncing from iTunes videos, movies, music and podcasts. However I just discovered that it has 1009mb of "Other" in iTunes. What on earth is this other? How do I remove it?

I have no apps. Just songs, music and music videos.

I know album art counts as other, but I doubt that you could have 1GB of art unless they were extermely high res images.

Album art and podcasts count as 'Other'?

How come video podcasts show up under 'Video', then? I'd assume audio podcasts would show up under 'Audio' .... ?

you'll never be able to remove the "Other"

it's a mix of the OS, album art, system preferences, apps, and anthing else under the sun.

Nice, so emails were a big part of it. Take like 5 pictures with your camera on the iphone, and then hook it up to itunes and check to see if that falls into other as well. If it does, the camera roll is included.

This is weird! I took 5 photos, then plugged it in. It auto synced and now the Other went up again!

I think you should try not syncing album artwork and podcasts. I bet other will go down quite a bit.

Looking at what you say you use and what I use the only significant difference is podcasts. I don't do them on the phone. My other is less than 1/2 of what yours seems to be. I have the 16 GB with twice as many songs (most have album artwork), twice the GB of video, and over 3x the MB of photos. I have also downloaded about 20 apps. Thats why podcast jumps out to me as a possible cause. Its easy enough to uncheck both album art and podcast for syncing so it may be worth a try.

As mentioned by other people, I think other also includes everything else that does not fit into the major categories, but the majority of that is text type stuff and therefore probably not eating up a ton of memory.

If you try getting rid of podcasts and artwork, please let us know the results. I'm curious myself to see what happens.

I have had this problem before, just restore your iphone. Apparently my iphone had a problem when upgrading to a newer firmware and didnt delete some old files.

This is why I got a 16G iPhone. I didn't want to be worrying about running out of space. :p It's not too late to exchange!

Do a restore to your phone and see if it goes down low. Then sync your music over, then photos if you have any, emails, contacts, and whatever else you have ONE at a time.

Wow, it's a good thing you don't have any Apps on there..

Other is basically a category that emails, album artwork, preferences, etc,etc.. fall into..
