I have had several over the years. On-the-ear simple drive me nuts (they hurt my ears)! Over-the-ear are my preference--tons of choices, but I suggest trying them on before even listening, as what good is great sound if you will not wear them. Between the Apple store and Best Buy you can try on a lot of different options.
I have a nokia/monster purity pro headphone. I love it cause it has noise cancellation, bluetooth wireless, AND best of all, 20hr battery life. New is $350 but I got it on amazon for $215.
I have had the the much older ones for about 5 year and they are still working well. My only complaint was the ear cushion started to peel along with the top band. I replaced the ear cushioning and was back to normal with no peeling.
The new version have been working well with no peeling at all.
In my neck of the woods, in ear and over/on ear seems to run 50/50. Some of the best contenders for Apple portables these days include -
Beats - for bassheads
Sennheiser - from super light portables to the Momentum line and bluetooth
Sony - too many models to mention
Denon - for the designer bunch along with their new basshead models
Bowers and Wilkins - P3 lightweights, P5 on ear designer, P7 excellent audio
Grados - several models
Monster - bassheads
and a long list of various other brands often sponsored by celebs.
