This isn't precisely Mac related but I'll ask anyway because I'm a little worried;
I just bought an OWC on-the-go FireWire800 Harddrive and now I plugged it in the computer. The Drive works really well but both LED lights are on. Both the Red and the Blue is shining like there's no tomorrow. I've only seen pictures of the drive when a single blue light is on so something's amiss. I scanned OWCs homepage and found this;
"My OWC Mercury On-The-Go USB/FireWire portable drives activity light sometimes turns red when I start the drive."
"During normal everyday operations, the blue activity light will stay on, or flash during activity. However, if the power exceeds 5V/1A, the red LED will come on indicating an overcurrent situation. This can also happen if voltage drops below 4.5V, such as when powering off the device. To explain in more simple terms, it's normal for the red LED to come on during startup and shutdown of the drive because the drive is coming up to speed, drawing it's maximum power for a few moments during it's spinup process. Upon shutdown, the power is terminated, therefore for a brief moment, dropping below 4.5V, down to 0 (off). "
What do you think? There's nothing wrong with the drive it works like a charm but it shouldn't be very good for it if it's over- or underpowered.
By the way I bought this from the US and I'm currently in Europe so the initial voltage from the electric system is different here (230V / 110V), but since the Macbook is down-stepping it to it's own current this shouldn't matter, should it? (the harddrive is BusPowered).
What to do? :/
Update:
I realized it was early afternoon in CMT (middle of the night here
) so I called their support and they told me there's nothing to worry about, the new models apparently have the red light as activity in addition to a the blinking blue one so it's all as it should be. Good for me. Lesson learned.
