When the 2009 Mac Pro first came out I was looking to upgrade to 12GB with OWC memory at http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other World Computing/85MP3E2M12GK/

I've waited a while since I haven't needed to upgrade yet but if memory serves me correct the 12GB upgrade kit use to be only around $220 when the Mac Pro was first released back in March, although now its $325.

Did the price increase or am I just not remembering correctly and if so why?

RAM prices have gone up, unfortunately.

I bought my Mac Pro upgrades when they were still cheap, but was waiting to upgrade my laptops. I finally went to buy about 2 weeks ago but noticed that the price for Macbook RAM has pretty much doubled since about March/April. :(

I'm shocked, I'm use to prices going down over time when it comes to computer parts. What is the reason why they have shot up so much? Did they also go up a lot on newegg?

It may have been $220 at some point, but not back in April/May...

Here's a thread from March that indicates it was $750 for 12GB... https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/674360/

That is if you buy 4GB Modules, if you buy 2GB Modules it's not. I have the Octo Core so I was only going to buy 2GB modules.

Take a look at barefeats page where they are testing the memory and they show that it's only $220 back when the Mac Pros first came out. For 6 2GB modules.

As always, demand is outpacing supply. Manufacturers will ramp up production to take advantage of higher prices which they inevitably overdue leading to another collapse in prices in about a year or so. Happens all the time in the memory industry.
