I originally purchased this external drive (500 Gb firewire 400) to backup my iMac G5, and I am now on replacement #4. It took a couple of tries, but I was able to perform a successful backup. I do backups infrequently, so the 30-day return period elapsed before I realized how 'flaky' the drive was. I was never able to backup again, and the drive soon became unmountable. Sent it back at my expense, and the replacement drive also failed to complete a backup. Two more replacement drives, no success. I just received #4 and tried to just copy the included sw package to my desktop - it hung after only copying 300Mb!

The symptoms are: the copying hangs, and Disk Utility and Finder stop responding. I can't even shutdown the system unless I unplug the drive.

Drive was tested on Mac Book Pro and also fails on that system.

This is my only firewire drive, but I have a couple of other firewire devices that continue to work fine on the iMac.

Any diagnostic suggestions? This is driving me nuts, and going back-and-forth to the UPS Store is getting old fast! I can't understand how this can check-out at OWC, yet I can't use the drive for a simple copy right out-of-the-box.
