Hello Everyone,

I picked up a used OWC Thunderbolt 3 dock, and I am trying to understand what is the best port to use to hook up my HDMI monitor.

The rear of the dock has a Mini-display port and a few Thunderbolt 3 ports:

Is the best option to get a Thunderbolt <--> HDMI adapter? Or should I use the mini-display port to connect? I believe my monitor has a Mini-Display port as well, so I would just need the cable to connect it directly to the dock.

Basically, just looking at the best way to connect my HDMI monitor to my OWC Thunderbolt 3 dock. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I think you may go with the Display port option but it would help if you list the specific monitor you have to check on connections and their specifications and what resolution you want.
E.g. I just gifted a new Dell monitor to a family member and there was an oddity; the Displayport 1.4 only was able to do 144Hz refresh rate, the HDMI only 100Hz.

For your Mini, Apple specified:

Video Support

Support for up to two displays at 2560 by 1600 pixels, both at millions of colors
Thunderbolt digital video output
  • Native Mini DisplayPort output
  • DVI output using Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter (sold separately)
  • VGA output using Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter (sold separately)
  • Dual-link DVI output using Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter (sold separately)
HDMI video output
  • Support for 1080p resolution at up to 60Hz
DVI output using HDMI to DVI Adapter (sold separately)
