P&S help

Hello,
I am looking for a new point&shoot camera... Ultimately I want a camera that is compact, nothing too big.. something I can fit in my purse.
I have been looking at 2 canon's which are the SD880 & SD990.. my only concern is the manual on the SD990, I haven't had much experience with using manual, I usually only set my cameras to Auto.. Do you need to use manual to take a good photo with the SD990?

Any suggestions on which camera would be good? Thanks.

Both cameras will work on Auto and produce roughly the same images. Manual can be helpful to get shots that Auto would screw up, but you are not required to use it.
