I am a total novice when it comes to Macs and computers in general so bare with me.

My Mac has been incredibley slow lately. And after some very quick google searches and checking my Activity Monitor, I have discovered that my page outs is about 8.76 GB and my free memory is 9.8 MB. Seems to not be so great. My questions are

A) How did this occur and what could I have done to prevent it?

B) How do I fix this? Add more RAM? Will that solve the problem?

After restarting my page outs are now at 0 but like I said, my Mac operates terribly slow. Its a 2008 2.4 with 1GB of RAM. Any suggestions?

What Mac OS X version do you run? 1 GB is not much for Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard or Mac OS X 10.7 Lion or OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion.

Get 4 GB of RAM:

If you want to enhance the performance of your Mac, be sure to check these two articles, do not just use applications, that promise to do it for you.

sim, I am running 10.6.8. I did some of the tips on those pages, I appreciate the help. I will look into adding more RAM, it doesn't seem to complicated, even for a rookie like myself.
