Pages: can't create character style whose only effect is to turn text red

I talked to an Apple support person and they were able to achieve this using the same steps I used but for some reason it doesn't work for me. The character style I created does turn text red as desired but it also changes all text to 12pt. When creating the style, for "Include these character attributes", the only attribute I have selected is text color. Why isn't this working as desired?

I'm on Mac OS 10.8.3 and Pages is version 4.3.
