Pages opens new document I have not asked for

I have Pages open and the Pages icon in the dock, and when I click on the icon to switch to Pages to work on a Pages document, it first automatically opens a new blank page. I haven't asked for this, I have to wait for the blank page to open, then close it to get it out of the way - how can I stop this irritating behavior? I can see nothing useful in Preferences.
