Pages text expansion snippets not syncing with ipad

I set up a bunch of text expansion snippets on my MBP laptop in iWork Pages 09. I'm running Maverick and iOS 8. I downloaded the Pages iPad app. My goal was to take my iPad mini with me on the road, and whenever I needed to type a document, open Pages and use the snippets I set up on the laptop. But the snippets aren't responding when I try typing them on the iPad. Any idea why? BTW, I'm extremely confused about the whole iCloud settings, so I don't know if that's the root of my problem or not. As of now, I turned OFF the iCloud on my iPad, but the snippets weren't working with iCloud turned ON.
