By the sea.
Sorry to re-post but I got no replies to this two weeks ago and it is a major problem for my users so I'd really appreciate some help with this if anyone has any clues.

re-post:
As per the subject really. Any ideas on how to get these to work? I've tried Shift+[key] but that doesn't help.

I've looked at the key-bindings but those two don't appear to be bound to anything so I can't un-bind them!

All clues greatfully received.

Those keys work for me :) Are you using the Apple X11 server? What kind of keyboard? Do the keys not work in any X applications at all, or are only certain ones causing trouble?

Yes, Apple's X11 server. Standard Apple USB keyboard. Hmmm.... now you mention it, yes, those keys work in other X apps... well, xman anyway.

The problem app is an xterm sent back over an ssh connection. I've brought up problems with this before - it looks like it's connected. Time to review that thread.

Thanks for the comments, it's clarified what the problem is for me.
