I have a series 2 42mm watch. While I do have 6S, I still use android as my daily driver. Is it possible to use my watch with android with any basic functionality? Or do I need to pair with 6s, use android and just use it as a basic watch? Could I at least track steps and workouts without the iPhone?

The Apple Watch cannot be paired with an android device. This Article will explain more in depth.

As mentioned you need to pair it with an iPhone to activate it. If you then want to leave the iPhone at home then it will track steps etc. but the feed of information will be to your iPhone Activity App and Health apps. You may elect to use a running app and be platform agnostic but realistically for a series 2 you will need to be in WiFi range and have an app with sufficient standalone capability to be totally self sufficient from the iPhone.

I worry for battery life too since it's going to be constantly hunting for it's partner iPhone.

If you prefer Android I would maximize on resale and sell it asap and get an Android smart watch, fitbit or something of the like.

Even the later models (maybe not LTE?) are lackluster without an iPhone counterpart.

There are some pretty nice looking (I don't know anything about functionality) Android compatible smart watches. While I love my AW I don't feel its the best looking smart watch....but on that note I don't know much about watch styles, whats in and whats not, etc....

This is easy to manage by just putting the watch in Airplane mode when Wi-Fi is not available for long periods when using the watch.

The watch and iPhone can sync up nightly to share Health / basic exercise data.

This works. During the summer, I wore my Apple watch and brought my S8+ with me while at work. I simply put the watch in airplane mode while at work to prevent the battery from draining. When I got home, turned off airplane mode and the data on the watch synced to my iPhone and life was good and balanced once again.

We gather that, but I think it's in your best interest if you want to utilize the Apple Watch to its fullest capability and features, it's going to require an iPhone to communicate.

The tight integration of the Apple Watch and iPhone is what makes it such a nice smart watch. Apple being in control of the hardware and software are capable of more (generally speaking) than most of the competition.

Many of the functions that make the Apple Watch a smart watch wont work without an iPhone. Even basic stuff like wifi connectivity is based on network data shared from the iPhone that is more often than not collected by the phone. With enough time of not using the iPhone even the wifi functionality will stop (routers replaced, passwords change, SSIDs change, etc).

Activity data should still be recorded however even that is sync'd data with the iPhone. Aside from a weekly summary if its past midnight you wont be able to see your data.
