Pairing Apple Watch that needs watch OS updated

I need to walk my sister-in-law through pairing my AW6 to her phone. I was gonna do it quickly earlier, but it’s saying AW needs its software updated, and when we clicked the link, her phone needed an update as well.

So once phone is updated, will we get the option to update the AW during pairing? I’ve never come across this issue.

Sounds like your watch was on watchOS 9 where as your sister’s phone was on iOS 15. This is my guess!

WatchOS 9 is not compatible with ios 15.

iOS 15.x =will support up to wos 8.x
ios 16 will support wos 8.x and wos 9.0.x

my ultra upgraded flawlessly
series 5 ceramic upgrade to wos 9.0.x took multiple attempts and about 5 hours total.
series 4 black SS was a complete disaster. The only way I could get it to 9.0.x was to do it through the Watch. then rest it, pair it to with the phone. For some reason it didn’t connect to the App Store so the bare minimum built apps were available. Unpaired and re-paired and finally it set up correctly
