Panic at the Kernal! 1st prob ever 10.3 to 10.4 upgrade gone bad

ram, yes, full =1 gig
disks-10.4 burns from a friend

ok so I am a Luddite and finally got around to upgrading from 10.3.9.
The disk said it was bad (a copy from a friend) but it won't give up the disk.
and now when it turns on i get this panic we are hanging out here.

So I need to know how to get this stuck disk out, and then what to do to restore my mac to working condition.

I bow at the feet of knowledge.

thanks nick! the hold the mouse button start up was the one that got the disk out!

Still getting "panic: were just hanging out here message"

I have my original disks, but would love some guidance on what to do next.
