Panic: Kernel Error when trying to format new drive

I recently put a new harddrive in my powerbook g4 1.5 ghz aluminum and when I try to format the drive I keep getting a kernel error saying "panic: we are hanging here". I tried searching and the only help I could find was for RAM related issues, can anyone help me out? Thanks
