After having problems with loosing help in os x applications and loosing my desktop settings & firefox favourites i thought i would verify disk and repair disk permissions. This is what i got when i verified the disk.(Macintosh HD)

I am relatively new to macs so want to know what is going on.Please Help!
 
You should boot into single user mode (hold down Apple & S together whilst booting), and run "fsck -y" on your disk. It will normally repair the issue. Reboot and you'll be able to fix permissions.

fsck = file system check. It's sort of equivalent to scandisk in Windows.
