I have a few photos that I would like to join together to make a pamoramic image. Can anyone recommend some software that would allow me to do this. Freeware/Shareware would be preferable as I can't justify a lot of money on a software package that I may only use one or twice.

on this web site you'll get some leads about software for both Mac and the other platform. There are several free "stitchers" to try and freeware for the Mac, which I assume you have since you asked here. Good luck!

Hugin works quite well, although it has occasionally crashed on me:

I have found that it produces good panoramas even if your photography isn't that good in the first place. For example this is a thumbnail of a small panorama I did in a few minutes. The original is pretty seamless and 15000+ pixels wide:
