I'm thinking about upgrading my girlfriend's G4 iBook to Tiger from Panther via the upgrade route (as opposed to clean install). I'd just like to know that, if worst comes to worst, will i be able to do a clean install of Panther from the original discs that came with the iBook? if the upgrade does go wrong does it completely screw up the computer or will it revert back to Panther?

You should be fine.

Obviously, before embarking on anything that you have a question about, you should back up your pertinent data.

If you have the space elsewhere, you should be able to use Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper! to make a bootable copy of the drive to restore if needed.

But in the end, you should be able to do a clean install of Panther from your original disks if necessary.

Good luck and post the results!
