This is a hobbyist thread certainly, but figured I'd ask about this. Have the last revision of 12" iBook, and am curious about trying Panther on it. Currently I don't have the resources to fully test this myself, I only have a 2005 PowerBook which is not fully operational at the moment. Can't get Panther to install on it from Retail discs obviously, so it'll have to be patchwork from an existing install.

The biggest block I see is the Radeon 9550, I have no idea if the iBook's version of this card has driver support under Panther or can be patched to support it. I assume the sudden motion sensor and trackpad won't fully work but that is a nonissue, basically brings the functionality to the level of a 2004 iBook with beefier specs.

Anyone have the resources to give this a try? I'd love to do the testing on this myself but currently I cannot. If I can get the PowerBook running again I will definitely try it.

You need the grey 10.3.7 disc for the early 2005 PBs. No patchwork necessary then. :)

As for the 2005 iBook, I could give this a try. We'll see. You've already pointed out the likely caveats.

After quite a struggle I did get Panther installed on the PowerBook, tried via USB and that did not work at all even after multiple configurations of it, definitely was under APM. Tried restoring the contents of the flash drive to a hard drive partition, that failed completely as the target hard drive it wasn't APM. I thought I could convert just one partition but that's not the case so I had to wipe a drive to install it.

Over FireWire it worked fine, odd that the USB flash drive did not work because using Disk Utility to restore the HDD from that same USB flash drive did the trick. My PowerBook just does not like USB apparently, I recall being unable to install Leopard this way even that the same iBook G4 I describe in this thread has done so without fail many times.
