Panther's DVD Player not working

Today I rented two DVD's (Kill Bill and Lost In Translation) and for the first time, I'm having trouble playing movies with Panther's DVD Player. The videos have dotted horizontal lines going all the way across the screen, and the lines are stacked from top to bottom of the screen - in other words, they fill up the whole screen. I tried playing the same discs using VLC and they work fine. I'm wondering if this is a common thing with OS X's DVD Player or if maybe I have something set wrong??? [I'm running OS X 10.3.3]
