Parallels won't recognize external HD

I've researched this a bit and am still confused. Parallels 6 w/ Windows 7 won't recognize my usb external HD. How can I get it do recognize it? Probably reformatting but I'm not sure how to do that. I need to be able to read/write on both OSX and Parallels/Windows 7. Any help gets the golden cookie of satisfaction.

If you format as FAT, both Windows and OS X can read/write

If you format as NTFS, Windows will read/write and you need NTFS-3G (free) for OS X to read/write

If you format as HFS+, OS X will read/write and you will need MacDrive (not free) for Windows to read/write
