Partition and restore from time machine?

Is it possible to partition a hard drive (SSD) and on one side of the partition reinstall the OS and restore from a time machine backup?

I've formatted the HD but some software/files are not working right, so rather than erase the HD again, I'd just like to test a partition and restore.
