partition os x HD to install Linux as virtual machine? recommend?

Hello,

I am new to mac! Have an os x with 320 GB HD. Some of the programs I use are Linux based and hence need to install fedora as virtual machine. have got VMware fusion too!

Is it recommended to partition the HD in order to install VMs? Will the machine slow down if I do this?
